Medium-sized snapper with a strong fight, found in NSW and WA over inshore reefs and mangrove-lined estuaries. Target them with live baits, soft plastics or small jigs worked close to structure in 2-30m, particularly at night. Moderate ciguatera risk, so handle with caution and check local consumption guidelines.
Generally fished with light tackle — match gear to the conditions and the size of fish you expect.
No seasonal pattern for blacktail snapper yet. Seasons shift with water temperature and local conditions — check state fisheries advice and recent local reports before planning a trip.
