Field notes

Long mangrove-lined channel between Hinchinbrook Island and the mainland. Iconic barramundi water — fish the creek mouths on the run-out, with mangrove jack and fingermark in the snags and threadfin salmon on the open flats.

Situation. A firm ridge will extend across northern Queensland from Wednesday and persist for the next few days, as a new high [1027 hPa] moves east across southern Australia.
Tuesday 19 May until midnight. Winds: Southeasterly 10 to 15 knots, reaching up to 20 knots offshore east of Cape York. Seas: Around 1 metre, increasing to 1.5 metres outside the reef. Swell: East to southeasterly below 1 metre. Weather: Partly cloudy.
Wednesday 20 May. Winds: Southeasterly 15 to 20 knots. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres. Swell: East to southeasterly below 1 metre. Weather: Mostly sunny.
Thursday 21 May. Winds: Southeasterly 15 to 25 knots. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the morning, then increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres around midday. Swell: Southeast to southwesterly around 1 metre. Weather: Partly cloudy. 70% chance of showers.
