Field notes

Working wharf and ferry terminal in Spring Bay, with year-round flathead and calamari on the weed edges out from the breakwall. Couta show up when the water cools, and Australian salmon work the bait through autumn. Note Maria Island marine reserve sits across the passage.

Situation. A high pressure centre near the South Australian coast extends a ridge of high pressure to the west of Tasmania. The ridge slowly approaches Tasmania and is expected to cross during Thursday and Friday, bringing mostly settled weather to the state. The high is then forecast to move to the east of Tasmania later Friday as a cold front approaches from the west during Saturday.
Tuesday 19 May until midnight. Winds: West to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 25 knots east of King Island. Seas: 1.5 metres, increasing to 1.5 to 2 metres east of King Island. Swell: Westerly 1 to 1.5 metres, increasing to 2 metres south of King Island. Weather: Cloudy.
Wednesday 20 May. Winds: Westerly 15 to 20 knots turning southwesterly 15 to 25 knots early in the morning. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening.
